Brainerd Comes Up Short in Championship!

The game was a lot closer than the score appeared, but in the end they lost 24-0. Owatonna had an answer for the Brainerd rushing game and Brainerd missed a number of opportunities through the air. It was 14-0 at half and it stayed that way until the 4th quarter. Brainerd had a number of chances to close the margin, but came up short.

Brainerd ends the season with a 12-1 record. It was a great run that included a perfect regular season and conference championship, section championship and defeated 5 top 10 ranked teams. Way to go Warriors!

Warriors Defeat Chaska in the State Semi-Final 20-19 To Advance to 5A Championship

The Warriors started the game with a big special teams play when Cole Smith returned the opening kick-off for a touchdown. Then the Chaska offense went the length of the field for a touchdown to tie it up 7-7. Then Brainerd Stoxen connected with I. Smith for another touchdown to take a 14-7 lead. The Warriors defense held the Chaska Hawks to only 7 points in the first quarter. It was 14-13, Brainerd at halftime. The missed extra point would come back and play a big role in the game.

In the second half the Warriors defense laid it all out and only gave up 6 points in the second half. Running Back Gessell broke loose for a long TD run in the 3rd Quarter. Brainerd went for a 2 point conversion and it failed. The score going into the 4th quarter was 20-19. Chaska missed a field goal and the defense of Brainerd held tough for the rest of the game. Brainerd got the ball with less than 2 minutes left and were able to run out the clock.

Next up: #1 Ranked Owatanna on Saturday, November 30 at 4PM

5A Final Four Now Set For Prep Bowl 2013

Chaska squeaked by a tough Andover team on Saturday to win 21-20 to advance to the state semi-finals. Chaska is located Southwest of Minneapolis.

St. Michael-Albertville (10-1) will face #1 Owatonna (11-0) in the other semi-final game on Friday, November 15 @ *2:00PM.

Warriors Win Running Away With 35-7 win over Henry Sibley in State Quarterfinals

November 8- The game didn't begin as Brainerd had hoped with a first play fumble which gave Henry Sibley the ball on Brainerd's 13 yard line. The defense came out and held their ground and Henry Sibley tried to capitalize with a field goal, but missed. After that it was all Brainerd. The next two drives resulted in touchdown drives of 80 and 50. The defense held and gave the offense the ball once again before halftime and drove and scored a touchdown and lead 21-0 at halftime.

The rain began to fall, but it didn't slow down Brainerd as they scored again just at the start of the 4th quarter after the defense had held Henry Sibley from scoring after the second half kickoff. Brainerd's lead of 28 held until about 3 minutes left in the game when Henry Sibley scored. The special team "'hands team recovered the onside kick and the offense scored again with just over a minute left to seal the game.

The Warriors remain perfect at 11-0 and will move on to play at the Metrodome on Saturday, November 16 at 7PM versus the winner of the Chaska and Andover game which will be played on Saturday, November 9.

Warriors Dominate In Section Final

November 1- The Warriors took a perfect 9-0 record into the Section 7- 5A final and knew they would be tested by a solid Chisago Lakes Wildcat team. Chisago Lakes opened the game with a long drive that resulted in a touchdown and the lead. Then it was Brainerd's turn and they scored 3 unanswered touchdowns on three consecutive drives to take a 20-7 halftime lead. In the second half the Warriors took the opening kick-off and then proceeded to drive the field to take a 27-7 lead. Each team traded touchdowns in the 3rd quarter and the Warriors went on to win 35-20.

The key to the game was the O-line, protecting the ball and the punishing running of Gessell (239 Yards) and Davis (134 Yards). The defense held after the opening drive and gave the offense good field position. It was a solid game all around.

Up Next: State Tournament Quarterfinals. Friday, November 8, 7PM @ St. John's University versus Section 5 winner Henry Sibley (7-4).

Warriors Defeat Cambridge-Isanti in Semi-Finals

The #1 seeded played host the Bluejackets of Cambridge-Isanti. Cambridge came in with a dramatic win on Tuesday over St. Francis and hoped to hand a season ending loss to the unbeaten Warriors. Both teams played tough football and Cambridge-Isanti took a lead in the 1st Quarter and then the Warriors scored two touchdowns prior to half after a 70 yard dash by L. Davis for a touchdown.

In the second half the game remained close, until the Warriors defense forced a fumble on the 5 yard line which was picked up and ran in for a touchdown. The Warriors then added another touchdown to put them up late 35-14 and that is how the game ended. The Warriors are now 9-0 on the season and will play for the Section 7 Championship at Brainerd High School on Friday night at 7:00PM.

Next opponent will be the Section 7 #2 seed Chisago Lakes as they defeated Bemidji in a close game. 35-28 was the final.

Warriors End with Perfect Regular Season

October 16- The Warriors played host to the Thundercats of Grand Rapids to conclude the regular season. It was also Parent's Night. The Warriors came out ready to play and finish the season on a high note. C. Gessell returned the opening kick-off for a touchdown. Before long the game was well in hand and the Warriors went to halftime with a 40-0 lead. The 2nd half rolled along quickly as time was running. However it gave just about all the Varsity players time to play in the game. Brained scored on a late touchdown to win the game 47-0.

The Warriors have claimed the Section 7- 5A #1 Seed which gives them a bye in the 1st round and home field advantage all the way through the section playoffs. They don't know their opponent, but know the game will be at Adamson Field in Brainerd on Saturday, October 26 at 2:00 PM.

So What Does The BWFA do?

It may surprise you, it isn't just the Website and Facebook page.

Brainerd Warrior Football Association (“BWFA”)- Press Release September 2013

You may be surprised to learn that the BWFA is not a social club, although watching the BWFA grilling brats to feed hungry football players after a scrimmage or selling t-shirts to raise funds that are used to help off-set athletic fees for middle school players; you would certainly see the social aspect of the BWFA. Bystanders are surprised to see the same BWFA members that keep showing up year after year and they often ask, “Why?” . . .Click HERE to Read Full Article

Warriors Clinch CLC North Championship!

October 11- It was the tail of two halves, Moorhead dominating in the first and Brainerd in the second. Only a few minutes into the game, the Spuds were already up 14-0 after a number of missed tackles, assignments and a turnover. The Spuds were able to move the ball at will and went into halftime with a lead of 20-0.

In the 2nd half the #3 ranked Warriors came out and dominated on both sides of the ball. Brainerd took the second half kick-off and drove the field to score on a 10 play drive. The defense that struggled in the first half, came to life in the second and stopped Moorhead's first drive and then the offense went work on an 88 yard drive in 10 plays with several big runs by Gessell. This narrowed the score to 20-14. After another stop by the defense, the Warriors drove 77 yards on 12 plays, and scored with just 1:13 remaining in the 4th Quarter. This drive was helped by a fake punt by L. McElfresh to continue the drive. The extra point was missed by only inches in a heavy wind. In overtime, Moorhead made a field goal as the defense stopped them again. However it only took one play from the ten yard line and Gessell scored a touchdown to end the game.

Because Brainerd has beat both Bemidji and Moorhead, they have clinched the CLC North Championship no matter the result of the next weeks game.

Up Next: Wednesday, October 16 versus Grand Rapids (0-7).

Warriors Win over #4 Ranked Bemidji 24-20

October 5- The Warriors improve to 6-0 after a last minute touchdown. Brainerd took a 14-0 lead in the first half, but Bemidji came back with two scores and went to the locker room only behind 17-14. There wasn't anymore scoring until late in the 4th quarter when Bemidji went ahead on a 6 yard run with about 5 minutes in the game, but missed the PAT and lead 20-17. Brainerd received the kickoff and started at their own 45 yard line. After a spectacular catch by C. Smith, for a long gain. With two minutes remaining, T. Stoxen connected with L. Davis for a 9 yard touchdown and L. McElfresh converted the PAT. The defense intercepted the ball on a screen pass, which sealed the win.

Warriors Remain Unbeaten After Tough Win

September 27, 2013- The Warriors improve to 5-0 after beating a strong St. Cloud Tech Tigers team 7 to 0. The Warriors scored on a running touchdown by Quarterback Stoxen in the first half and that is all they would need. The defense kept the Tigers out of the endzone and only allowed a field goal attempt that was missed. After last years game that provided 70 points, it was fitting that both defenses, heavy with seniors would play such a tough game. The Warriors improve to 3-0 on the road in 2013. Up next: 4th Ranked and 5-0 Bemidji for homecoming on Saturday, October 5th at 2:00PM.

Warriors Defeat Unbeaten St. Cloud Apollo

Sept. 20, 2013- The Warriors improve to 4-0 and 2-0 at home. It was a cold soggy night, but it didn't seem to slow down the Warrior offense. The offense scored on 5 of 6 first half possessions. The defense made adjustments and capitalized on several Apollo turnovers. The Warriors went to halftime with a 35-7 lead. Both teams added 7 points in the second half. The key to the game was the offensive line and making big holes for the running backs who rushed for a combined 387 yards. Brainerd only attempted 3 passes during the game.

Every game this year has been against a team without a loss and that will continue next week versus St. Cloud Tech (4-0) at St. John's University on September 27. Check out video highlights from Lakeland Public TV Sports (Click HERE).

Warriors Win Home Opener 42-10

Sept. 13, 2013- The Warriors win 42-10 in their home opener against the Cardinals of Alexandria. The game opened with a quick touchdown by the Warriors to go ahead 7-0, but the Cardinals quickly drove the entire field and tied it up. The Warriors lead going into half by a score of 14-10. However the second half, the defense held the Cardinals scoreless and the offense tacked on 28 unanswered points. The Brainerd Warriors improve to 3-0. Up next: St. Cloud Apollo on September 20. Check out video highlights from Lakeland TV Sports (Click HERE).

Behind a steady dose of rushing from Conor Gessell, big play receptions and turnovers by the defense, the Warriors improve to 2-0 in the conference and on the road. It was 13-0 at halftime, and then in the 3rd quarter the Warriors added a touchdown by Gessell and 2 point conversion by Q. McElfresh. Welcome to Brainerd Football

Welcome to Brainerd football. Warrior football embraces the philosophy that is the Warrior Way, a special spirit and belief shared by legions of alumni, friends, and families. It is a spirit that challenges, guides, and leads us. On any given week in the fall, nearly 1,000 youngsters in the Brainerd School District practice and play football. They are coached by people, many of them volunteers, whose goal is to teach the joy of the game; impart its techniques and strategies; to encourage student-athletes to share and experience the thrill of competition and to, along the way, learn some of life’s valuable lessons.

The Warrior Coaching Staff 6-12, the many volunteers in the BYAA, YMCA and Baxter youth programs thank you for the opportunities you provide and the support you give.

We are grateful for your interest and involvement in our football at all levels. It is Warrior Way football. Enjoy!
